The HCSTF was formed in 2012 to investigate and assist the NSW Police with the investigation of hate crimes. Overview The HCSTF has nine experienced investigative and prosecutorial members, one scientific or psychological member and up to nine liaison officers. The unit is managed by a detective superintendent with five detective and two civilian staff. Its role is to investigate alleged crimes committed on the basis of race, colour or national or ethnic origin. Operation Yentaben In August 2014, the HCSTF launched the Operation Yentaben investigation into the alleged murder of Sydney student Khalil Gibb. In November 2016, the NSW Police announced that the 24-year-old Gibb, from Sydney, had been charged with the murder of his friend, Khaled Sharrouf. He was also charged with the attempted murder of his cousin, Hamdi Alqudsi, in an alleged incident in the Hawkesbury. The two were originally taken into custody as a result of an unrelated investigation, and were held at Goulburn Police Station for five weeks. On 30 November 2016, Khaled Sharrouf was charged with five counts of aggravated indecent assault, two counts of indecent assault, one count of sexual intercourse with a child under 16 years, one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity and one count of procuring a child under 16 to have sexual intercourse.
